Native colonization in Suriname dates back to 3000 before Christ. The largest tribe was the Arawaks, a nomadic coastal tribe that lived on hunting and fishing. They were the first inhabitants of the region.

They settled in Galibi (Kupali Yumi, which means “ancestor tree”) at the mouth of the Marowijne River. While the large Arawak and Caribe tribes lived along the coast and savannah, the smaller groups of indigenous peoples lived in the interior tropical forest, such as the Akurio, Trió, Warrau and Wayana.
